Dr. Seth R. Thaller holds a current Tenure Professorship with the University of Miami Division of Plastic Surgery. He joined the division as Chief in 1995 after receiving extensive multi-disciplinary training including craniofacial fellowship training at the University of California Los Angeles under Dr. Henry Kawamoto. Since then, Dr. Thaller has worked to expand the UM-PRS in all relevant arenas of patient care. His background, which includes training in oral and maxillofacial surgery, has led him to encourage facial trauma treatment’s inclusion of plastic surgery. He has also sought to establish proper management protocols for emergent hand surgery cases at affiliated hospitals and to stress the presence of plastic surgery in his surgical management. Dr. Thaller held the position of Chief until March 2017 as well as Program Director.
Seth R. Thaller was born and raised in New York City and its surrounding suburbs. Graduated with honors in History from Lafayette College, Easton, PA in 1971. Obtained MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1975. Completed a Straight Medicine Internship at SUNY Buffalo in 1976. Awarded a DMD from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry in 1978 followed by two years of General Surgery training at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan. Achieved training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary-Harvard Medical School in 1980 and became Board Certified in the specialty. Initiated Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center from 1983-85. This was followed by specialty training at UCLA with the world-renowned Dr. Henry Kawamoto. He was board certified in Plastic Surgery in 1986. Following, this he was a member of the full-time faculty at The University of California Davis where he was an Associate Professor with tenure until 1995. He then moved east to become Professor and Chief of the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery at The University of Miami for almost 23 years until he stepped down from his administrative responsibilities. He still maintains his position as Professor (tenured) at UM.
He has an active clinical and basic research portfolio contributing numerous peer-reviewed publications to the most significant specialty journals and presentations regionally, nationally, and internationally. He serves as a Senior Editor of the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and is a Senior Examiner for the Oral Examinations of The American Board of Plastic Surgery. During his time at UM, he has been an active participant in Voluntary Surgical missions primarily in Port Au Prince, Haiti for over 20 years through Medishare and was one of the first plastic surgeons to respond on the ground during the devastating earthquake in that country.
He has been married to his wife Pat for over 30 years after meeting during his plastic surgery residency in NYC and has two grown children. In his free time, he is learning the art of golf.
