Sergio Serrano became interested in HIV during his undergraduate studies, when he got to know specialists in this field. After receiving clinical training in infectious diseases at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, as well as at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, he completed his PhD, in the HIV Department of San Carlos Hospital, on clinical consequences. chronic inflammation from HIV.

He did post-doctoral studies at the University of San Francisco, California. In 2012, he was given responsibilities in research and in the clinical sector at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital. He coordinates a multidisciplinary clinic and is involved in the comprehensive management of people over 50 infected with HIV. He also manages the screening and treatment of HPV-related dysplasia.

He has recently been interested in the role of interactions between the microbiota and mucosal immunity in the case of chronic inflammation. He coordinates an international research project on the functional consequences of the microbiota in HIV and on the role of therapies intended to modify the microbiome. He is involved in academic projects at the University of Alcalá. He also coordinates the “Microbiome and Vaccines” working group of the Spanish AIDS Research Network (RIS) and he is involved in the editorial committee that draws up guidelines on the use of antiretroviral therapy (GESIDA).
