Dr Serhat Unal is Professor of Medicine and previous Dean of the Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey. He received his medical training and fellowship in Internal Medicine and infectious diseases from Hacettepe University and a fellowship in infectious diseases from New England Deaconess Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr Unal has held various leadership positions including chair of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) European Study Group of Nosocomial Infections, Director of the Hacettepe University AIDS Treatment and Research Center, Ankara AIDS Prevention Society, Ankara Microbiology Society, and the Turkish Society of Internal Medicine. He is also a member of the Turkish Medical Association, the Infectious Diseases Society of Turkey, the American Society of Microbiology, the International Society for Infectious Diseases, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
His research interests have been drug-resistant pathogens including methicillin-resistant staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, penicillin-resistant pneumococci, adult vaccination, health care associated infections and HIV infection, and he has published over 200 papers in these fields.
