Sergio T. Ferreira graduated in Chemistry in 1985 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and obtained his Ph.D. in 1989 from the Institute of Biophysics of the same University. In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry at UFRJ. Since 1999, he has been Professor of Biochemistry at the same Institute (in which he has served as Scientific Director since 2011), and since 2014 he holds a double appointment as Professor of Biophysics and Neuroscience at the Institute of Biophysics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. From 1998-to 2007 he held an additional appointment as Associate Investigator at the Brazilian National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (Campinas, State of Sao Paulo). Ferreira has served in a number of academic positions. He was Head of the Department (2001-2004), Associate Head (1996-1999), and Chairman of the Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry of UFRJ (1999-2001). He was Vice-President (1998 to 2000) and Secretary-General (2001-2002) of the Brazilian Biophysical Society, served as Council Member of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1997-2001), and was a Member of the Committee on Symposia and Workshops of the International Union for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) (2006-2014).
