Dr. Berenholtz is a practicing anesthesiologist and critical care physician, a patient safety researcher and a leader. He is a Professor in the Departments of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and Surgery in the School of Medicine, and Health Policy and Management in the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Berenholtz is the Physician Director of Inpatient Quality and Safety for the Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Dr. Berenholtz holds a Masters's degree in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Berenholtz has authored more than 80 articles and chapters in the fields of patient safety, ICU care, quality health care, and evidence-based medicine. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on more than a dozen grants or contracts to develop, implement and evaluate patient safety improvement efforts, including the successful AHRQ funded Keystone ICU project to improve teamwork, communication.
