Sean McGinty obtained a BSc in Mathematics & Physics from the University of Strathclyde, before completing a PhD in Applied Mathematics. Following some short postdoctoral positions, he moved into the industry, working in the Renewable Energy Sector, where his role involved forecasting the energy output of wind farms at the pre-construction stage. After two enjoyable years in industry, he returned to academia as a Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Strathclyde. Following this, he became a Knowledge Exchange Associate in the Department, with the remit of helping Mathematics & Statistics colleagues to better engage with industry and other stakeholders.

McGinty was appointed Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 2015, within the Division of Biomedical Engineering, where his mathematical modeling research is being applied to problems in biology and health. During this time, he became a Fellow of The Institute of Mathematics & its Applications (FIMA designation) and a Chartered Mathematician (CMath designation).

From 2016-2024, McGinty was the Director of CMALS (Centre for Mathematics Applied to the Life Sciences), a Scottish center whose mission is to promote interdisciplinary research and scholarship in Mathematical Biology. In 2020 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and subsequently promoted to Reader the following year in 2021.

From 2019-2021, McGinty served on the EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) and he has taken part in several EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Funding Prioritisation Panels. Further afield, he plays a role in the strategic development of a number of other organizations related to Mathematical Sciences, including the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI), where he leads a special interest group. Since 2022, he has been the School lead for Impact Culture, and in 2023, he took up a key leadership role as Senior Senate Assessor for Student Conduct.
