Sean Dinneen MBBCh, BAO

Dr Seán Dinneen graduated from University College Cork Medical School in 1985. After a period of postgraduate training in Ireland he travelled to the USA where he completed training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He completed a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada before returning to a staff position at the Mayo Clinic in the Division of Endocrinology with a joint appointment to the Division of Health Services Research. In 2000 he was appointed as a Community Diabetologist in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK; one of the first such appointments in the NHS. Dr. Dinneen returned to Ireland in 2005 as a Senior Lecturer in Medicine (NUI Galway) and Consultant Endocrinologist (Galway University Hospitals).

His professional interests include developing and evaluating programmes of self-management education for people with diabetes, developing optimal models of community-based diabetes care and understanding the diabetic foot. Recent professional achievements include delivering to completion a large multi-centre study evaluating 2 different methods of follow-up of patients with type 1 diabetes following structured education (the Irish DAFNE Study), being part of a successful bid to establish Ireland’s first and only School of Podiatry in NUI Galway, being appointed Chair of the EASD’s (Extra-European) Postgraduate Education Committee and being appointed Head of School of Medicine NUI Galway. Recent personal achievements include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (2007), learning to swim (2009) and walking the last 110 km of the Camino de Santiago (2010).
