Dr. Scott Rigden, M.D. is board certified in Family Practice and Bariatrics. He has been in the private practice of medicine since 1976 and at his present location in the Phoenix, Arizona area since 1984. His medical practice is unique in that it focuses on evaluation and treatment of obesity and related metabolic problems, as well as chronic illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, with a Functional Medicine approach.

Dr. Rigden was born and raised in the St. Louis area and won the Albert C. Murphy academic scholarship to attend Cornell University. After graduating from Cornell cum laude, he attended St. Louis University Medical School and then completed a three-year Family Practice Residency program in Lansing, Michigan. He served his first seven years of medical practice in Byron, Illinois, where he was one of only several medical doctors in the entire county, with the nearest hospital twenty-two miles away. To further his professional growth and development, he relocated to the Phoenix, Arizona area in 1984 to have more time to teach, conduct and publish clinical research, in addition to being a busy practitioner.

As a new family practice physician in rural Illinois in the 1970’s, he treated thousands of patients, many of them overweight. While there, he made a professional commitment to reach out to the obese patient and began intensive studies in nutrition and weight management. This led to fulfilling the criteria to become a board-certified physician in the specialty of bariatrics (the management of obesity and related problems). He has worked with obese patients since 1976. Since then, he has authored a number of articles on obesity and lectured extensively both to lay and professional audiences.
