Sara Tullis Wester MD, FACS

Sara Tullis Wester, MD, is a Clinical Professor at the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. After working as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, she went to medical school at Harvard Medical School and did her Ophthalmology Residency and subspecialty ASOPRS fellowship training in Oculofacial Plastic, Reconstructive, Orbital, and Oncology surgery at Bascom Palmer. She specializes in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and orbit and has a clinical focus on the management of Thyroid Eye Disease.

 Her research focus is on adipose stem cells and their application in the treatment of Thyroid Eye Disease as well as reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. She has authored several chapters on stem cells in ophthalmology as well as multiple peer-reviewed journal articles on alterations in the adipose stem cell population in Thyroid Eye Disease. In addition, she has been involved in several multi-center randomized controlled clinical trials on Thyroid Eye Disease and is a consultant for Horizon Therapeutics (manufactures Tepezza, the first FDA-approved medication for Thyroid Eye Disease).

She has been an invited speaker on advance in Thyroid Eye Disease both nationally and internationally. She has also been an invited speaker nationally and internationally on eyelid surgery, aesthetic eyelid surgery and non-surgical rejuvenation, lacrimal procedures, orbital surgery, and many other topics. She has won several awards, including Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors, F1000 Invited Faculty, Women Extraordinaire Award, Leading Physicians of the World, and Marquis Who’s Who Top Ophthalmologist awards, is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, has been interviewed several times for her expertise in thyroid eye disease, and was invited to be on the scientific advisory committee for ASOPRS. She is on the executive board of Women in Ophthalmology and on the board of directors for the North American Society for Academic Orbital Surgeons. She is the program director for the NASAOS spring meeting and is one of the program directors for the Thyroid Symposium at the World Ophthalmology Congress.
