Sara E. Bartolomeo RN, BSN, SRNA

Sara E. Bartolomeo, RN, BSN is an enthusiastic third-year student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA) at Duke University School of Nursing. Her journey to anesthesia began when she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2009 from Southern Connecticut State University. From 2009 to 2016 she gained nursing experience in a variety of roles, with over four years of that being in the intensive care unit. Throughout her nursing career, Sara has been deeply involved in quality improvement, including serving as Secretary to Milford Hospital’s first Nursing Practice Council, and as Co-Chair and Chair to Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s Medical Intensive Care Unit’s Unit Practice Council. At Sharp Grossmont Hospital she also participated in the Hospital-Wide Nursing Practice Council, the Night-Shift Hospital-Wide Nursing Practice Council, and the Healthy Work Environment Committee where she worked on quality improvement projects to improve patient outcomes.

As an SRNA, she has taken an interest in simulation and difficult airway education, and has assisted in teaching cricothyrotomy to first year SRNAs in both the simulation and cadaver laboratories. In addition, her DNP project, "Mobile Cricothyrotomy Simulation Cart Improves Anesthesia Providers’ Confidence, Technical Skills, and Procedure Time," implemented evidence-based practices for attaining and retaining cricothyrotomy skills among anesthesia providers in order to increase their level of preparedness for cannot intubate, cannot ventilate events.
