Santosh Gupta MD

Dr. Santosh Gupta is a pediatric endocrinologist, Associate Professor, Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis, USA. She is also a Certified Diabetes Educator (USA). In 2006, she decided to volunteer providing diabetes care to indigent children at Rama Krishna Mission hospital in Haridwar, India. She found that marginalized children with T1D did not live long due to unaffordability or unavailability of insulin and medical care. Another reason of poor survival, common with resource sufficient T1D children, in India is lack of Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and carbohydrate counting which are essential for treatment with Multiple Dose Insulin Injection (MDI). The role of a diabetes educator is woefully under recognized and diabetes treatment, not management, is physician centric.
