Dr. Sandra has been studying molecular evolution and phylogeny since 1985 and received her PhD from the University of Michigan in 1990 (Nature 1990, PNAS 1990, PNAS 1993). She continued to study deep phylogeny of eukaryotes and molecular evolution as a postdoc in Nova Scotia (PNAS 1996, PNAS 1997, Science 2000), and later as a lecturer and then professor of Bioinformatics at the University of York (UK). Her research focus is a combination of molecular phylogeny, patterns of protein sequence evolution, and systematics of major understudied orphan taxa such as Dictyostelium (Science 2006, with P Schaap) and Choanoflagellata (PNAS 2008, with B Leadbeater). She moved to Uppsala University in 2007 to head the program in systematic biology.
