Sam Klein studied medicine at the KU Leuven University, Belgium. He recently completed his Neurosurgery residency in 2019 at the University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium. During his neurosurgery residency, he became involved in neurotrauma research and started a Ph.D. project under the supervision of professor Bart Depreitere (Dept. of Neurosurgery, UZ Leuven, Belgium) and professor Geert Meyfroidt (Dept. of Intensive Care Medicine, UZ Leuven, Belgium). During this project, he became aware of the important advantages of multidisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, and also between clinicians and scientists/technologists.

Sam Klein's Ph.D. project focused on the basic (patho-)physiology of cerebrovascular autoregulation. During this Ph.D. project, he developed a method for autoregulation assessment by direct visualization of pial arterial blood flow in the piglet brain. The ultimate goal of his current research project is to gain further insight into the basic physiology of cerebral autoregulation and provide a basis for the implementation of experimental concepts into clinical practice. From October 2019 he will continue his research and clinical work at the Neurosurgical Department of the University Hospital Brussels (UZ Brussels, Belgium).
