Samir A. Shah MD, FACG, FASGE, AGAF

Dr. Samir A. Shah is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, RI, and Chief of Gastroenterology at the Miriam Hospital. He is a partner with Gastroenterology Associates, Inc, an independent, private practice GI group affiliated with Brown and Lifespan. He earned his BA in Biochemistry magna cum laude at Brown and his MD at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. After graduating, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He continued on for a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the same institution where he was awarded a Howard Hughes Postdoctoral Fellowship for Physicians and spent two years in the laboratory studying murine models of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Dr. Shah has co-authored more than 100 articles/book chapters/abstracts and has given over 100 invited presentations primarily devoted to inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Shah is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Brown University’s Teaching Recognition Award, The Dean’s Teaching Excellence Certificate, Brown University’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Clinical Faculty, the Beckwith Family Award for Outstanding Teaching, the American College of Gastroenterology’s Freshman Governor’s Award and later the William D. Carey Award. The New England Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation named him Humanitarian of the Year for 2009 and co-recipient of the Joan Cutler lifetime achievement award in 2020. Rhode Island Monthly consistently names him among the Top Doctors in Rhode Island.

He served as co-chair of the Membership Committee of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation from 2018-2021 and previously served as co-chair of the Professional Education Committee from 2015-2018. He served as co-chair of the IBD Circle, an online community sponsored by the Crohns and Colitis Foundation and the ACG. He has been one of the ACG representatives to the Digestive Diseases National Coalition (DDNC) and served as President of the DDNC from 2018-2020. He has been on the Board of Trustees for the American College of Gastroenterology since 2005 and as of 10/25/2021 is serving as the President of the ACG. He has participated in several multi-center clinical trials of cutting-edge therapies for IBD, was co-principal investigator for OSCAR (Ocean State Crohn’s and Colitis Area Registry). His group participates in the IBD QORUS program through the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
