Sally Barrington MBBS, MSc, FRCP, FRCR, MD

Professor Sally Barrington is best known for her successful development and implementation of international methods for PET risk and response assessment and adapted therapy in lymphoma, now funded as standard of care and implemented worldwide in clinical practice. She developed the 5-point ‘Deauville’ scale and more recently the international benchmark for measurement of metabolic tumour volume.

Sally is author of the 2014 Lugano classification guidelines for lymphoma. Her clinical trials work involved establishing quality assurance programmes for international phase II/III trials and best clinical practice.

She has co-led the UK PET Core imaging lab with Professor Paul Marsden for over 20 years, a research network of 50 imaging centres. She was the first imaging doctor in the UK to be awarded a prestigious NIHR research professorship in 2017 with a programme focused on using PET to improve outcomes for patients with cancer. This allowed her to expand her clinical trials program exploring PET-CT and PETMR to response adapt treatment in lymphoma to solid cancers and the application of artificial intelligence to provide efficiencies in the radiotherapy pathway using image guidance.

She is a member of the scientific committee for international workshops on PET in lymphoma and myeloma (2010-), the International Symposium on Hodgkin lymphoma and the Steering Committee for the international PETRA consortium investigating PET as a biomarker of response to lymphoma therapy. She has 190 peer reviewed publications and was a recipient of the BNMS Presidents Medal for her international contributions to Nuclear Medicine.
