Dr. Sadayappan’s research is driven by the desire to improve cardiac health with the long-range goal of preventing the development of heart failure that results from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and coronary heart disease. Dr. Sadayappan and his team members have focused on studying the regulation of both cardiac and skeletal muscles in health and various pathophysiological conditions. Specifically, the studies are to determine (i) secondary risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, etc in the South Asian population to aggravate the severity of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, (ii) molecular mechanisms that mediate heart failure with ejection fractions and cardiac arrhythmias, (iii) autoimmune mechanisms in post-myocardial injury and (iv) the pathology of skeletal muscle in distal arthrogryposis.

As Director of the Heart Branch of the Heart, Lung, and Vascular Institute, Dr. Sadayappan is responsible for carrying out its mission and implementing its business plan. As Vice-Chair of Basic Research, Internal Medicine, and Division of Cardiology, he supervises clinical, basic, and translational research, formulate and integrates research activities, and establishes programs that will foster public-private partnerships, philanthropy, and commercialization of new drugs, devices, and technology. He is the founder of Red Saree, Inc., a registered nonprofit corporation in the State of Ohio, the USA, which is committed to providing healthcare awareness among South Asians around the world through engaging community, research, and educational activities towards a happier and healthier life.
