Sajal Chakraborti, PhD, DSc, is a Professor at the University of Kalyani, West Bengal, India. received his MSc (1976) and PhD (1982) degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Calcutta and DSc (2004) degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Kalyani, West Bengal. He received Fulbright Fellowship for post-doctoral research at the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Utah, and also at the New York Medical College (1987-1990). He joined the University of Kalyani as a Lecturer in 1985 and in 2006; he became a Professor of Biochemistry at the same University. He also received DBT (senior) overseas fellowship in the year 1999 for his research at the University of Florida (Gainesville). His research for the past thirty years aimed at understanding basic biochemical mechanisms that regulate pulmonary vascular tone. His research contributed significantly to the field of proteases like matrix metalloproteases, serine proteases, and calpain and their role in the activation of phospholipase A2 to generate the powerful vasoactive mediator, thromboxanes.
