Sabine Oberhauser studied medicine at the University of Vienna. In 1987 she received her doctorate and successfully completed her specialist training as a general practitioner and in the field of pediatrics and adolescent medicine in 1997. After training as a hospital manager at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and Danube University Krems, she also obtained the title of Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in 2003. From 1998 to 2010 she was a freelance staff representative in the union of municipal employees (GdG).

She acted as chairwoman of the staff group committee for doctors from 2001 to 2007. Between 2003 and 2010 she was also the chairwoman of the Doctors Working Group in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions(ÖGB). In addition, from 1999 she was a member of the Vienna Medical Chamber and from 2003 to 2006 as a presidential adviser in this chamber. When she was elected Vice President of the OGB in 2009 and Federal Women's Chairwoman in 2013, she was the first female doctor to hold a top position in the Austrian trade union movement.
