Sabina Fijan PhD

Sabina Fijan has been employed at the University of Maribor since May 1999, initially as a researcher at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where she contributed to multiple European Commission projects under the 5th, 6th, and 7th Framework Programmes. During this period, she completed her Master’s degree in 2003 and her Doctoral degree in 2005, followed by a postdoctoral project in 2010 focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various antimicrobial procedures against pathogenic microorganisms.

Since 2011, she has served as a university professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, Slovenia. She coordinates several academic courses, including Chosen Chapters of Microbiology and Biochemistry for postgraduate bioinformatics students, Project Acquisition, Management, and Execution for undergraduate nursing students, and Beneficial Foods and Beneficial Microbes for postgraduate nursing students within the Clinical and Preventive Foods program.

She has authored numerous publications in recognized international journals. Over time, her research focus has evolved from pathogenic microorganisms to beneficial microorganisms, with a particular emphasis on probiotics. Her most cited publication, “Microorganisms with Claimed Probiotic Properties: An Overview of Recent Literature,” was published in 2014 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
