S. M. Mustafa Zaman MBBS, DTCD, MD

Prof. Dr. S M Mustafa Zaman is a 1994 graduate (MBBS) of Dhaka Medical College. Then he studied Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD) at the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH). He has also done a lot of training both in DMC and BSMMU under many renowned professors on medicine, cardiology, cardiovascular disease, epidemiology & prevention. His degrees and training are enormous including a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Cardiology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in 2004, Intensive PCI training from Japan, Interventional Cardiology from Singapore and an Honorary Fellowship from the Association of Physicians of India in 2020.

He is currently a faculty member (Professor of Interventional Cardiology, Department of Cardiology) and hall provost at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. He is also a Cardiology, Chest Diseases & Medicine Specialist at Labaid Specialized Hospital. Under the supervision of Professor S M Mustafa Zaman, 19 trainee doctors took postgraduate training and 10 students completed their thesis in cardiology. He is an examiner of Clinical and Interventional Cardiology in a postgraduate examination at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the only medical university in Bangladesh. Besides, he is an assistant secretary of the Bangladesh Medical Association Journal, Journal of Chest & Heart of Bangladesh. Moreover, he is the president of the Bangladesh Cardiovascular Research Foundation and the former assistant proctor at BSMMU.

Besides being a doctor, S M Mustafa Zaman, is a prolific writer, speaker, and a very well-known public figure in the media. He is an integral part of various academic, disciplinary, and scientific committees of the department of cardiology. He was the Director of the Cath lab of the Department of Cardiology, BSMMU. He is also a President of the Bangladesh Student’s League Dhaka Medical College Branch Committee- 1993. Moreover, he is serving as General Secretary of Dhaka Medical College Alumni Trust voluntarily and the Secretary General of the Association of Physicians of Bangladesh (APB). He is the Expert Panel Chief of “National guideline for reprocessing and reuse of single-use of medical devices” – A project of the Noncommunicable disease Control Program under the Director General of Health Service (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He was the Course Director and program organizer in the training of doctors, and nurses on cardiovascular disease, diagenesis, and update management. He is a lifetime member of several national and professional societies like DMC Alumni Trust, Hypertension and Research Centre, Bangladesh Cardiac Society, APB and BMA. He has been the Central Executive member of the Central Subcommittee of Health and Population-2019-2022. He has got a reputation for working as a Presenter in a health awareness program of Bangladesh Television (BTV) named “Shastho Jiggasa” since 2009. He regularly participated in health awareness programs as a speaker in different electronic mass media.
