Ryan Barbaro MD, MS

Ryan Barbaro, M.D., M.S., is a Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Michigan. Dr. Barbaro earned his M.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and trained in pediatrics at North Carolina Children's Hospital. He also completed fellowships in pediatric critical care medicine at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and pediatric health services research at the Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Barbaro's research seeks to improve the short- and long-term outcomes for children requiring the life support technology extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Dr. Barbaro is currently leading the international NIH-funded study ASCEND (ARDS in Children and ECMO initiation strategies’ impact on Neuro-Development). ASCEND aims to characterize the one-year outcomes of ECMO-supported children and aims to address the question of if and when ECMO should be initiated in children with severe lung injury called pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. Dr. Barbaro is also the Registry Chair for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), an international consortium of more than 500 ECMO centers.
