Ruth Chia PhD

Ruth Chia, PhD, is a scientist and strategic research leader with extensive experience in human genetics, neuroscience, and data-driven discovery. She is currently an ELITE@UM Fellow at the University of Malaya, where she advances purpose-driven research and scientific leadership while contributing to the development of Malaysia’s research and innovation ecosystem. In parallel, she has spent over a decade within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Intramural Research Program, where she serves as a Staff Scientist and holds the conferred honorific title of Associate Scientist.

At the NIH, Ruth has led and managed complex wet-lab and dry-lab research programs focused on validating genetic variants and gene targets identified through large-scale genomic studies, including whole-genome sequencing. Her work integrates experimental biology, computational analysis, and project management across high-performing, multidisciplinary teams, with an emphasis on rigor, reproducibility, and translational relevance.

Ruth earned her PhD in Neuroscience and Genetics from University College London (UCL) and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, First Class with Distinction, from the University of Malaya. Passionate about people, data, and discovery with purpose, she brings a thoughtful, systems-level approach to science—bridging deep biological insight with strategic thinking to drive meaningful, long-term impact in research and beyond.
