Rui Eduardo Castro received his B.Sc. degree in Microbiology and Genetics in 2002, after completing a thesis on the role of tauroursodeoxycholic acid in apoptosis following several neurological insults. In his PhD thesis, he further illustrated the role of ursodeoxycholic acid in inhibiting apoptosis at the transcriptional level, with the involvement of classical mitochondrial pathways in primary rat hepatocytes.
