Rui Barros MD, PhD

Dr. Rui Sergio Monteiro De Barros is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and shoulder surgery, as well as microsurgery. He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in 1983, and later earned his Master's (1989) and Doctorate (1994) in Orthopedics and Traumatology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). In 1992, he completed a fellowship in Hand Surgery at the University of Louisville, USA. Dr. Barros also pursued post-doctoral studies at UFPA in 2022. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of the State of Pará (UEPA), where he is also the Coordinator of the Medical Residency in Hand Surgery at UEPA-Porto Dias and a Professor in the Professional Master's in Experimental Surgery program.

Dr. Barros is a prominent leader in his field, holding the position of President-elect (2025) of the Brazilian Society of Hand Surgery and being an active member of various national and international organizations, including the Brazilian Society of Clinical Medicine (SBCM), the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT), the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and AANA (American Association for Neuromuscular Therapy). Additionally, he is an academic member of the Academy of Medicine of Para. His research interests focus on vascular and peripheral nerve microsurgery. Dr. Barros also plays a pivotal role in medical ethics as the Coordinator of the Research Ethics Committee at Hospital Porto Dias.
