Ruby Pawankar, MD, Ph.D., FRCP, FAAAAI, is a Professor of Allergy at the Department of Pediatrics at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, a Guest Professor at Kyung Hee University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, and at Showa University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating in medicine from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India, Prof. Pawankar post-graduated from BJ Medical College, Pune, and trained in allergy and clinical immunology at Nippon Medical School and Juntendo University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, where she earned her doctorate.

Prof. Pawankar is President of the World Allergy Organization (WAO), serves on numerous committees of several academic organizations and grant reviews, and is a member/fellow of many academic organizations, including the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum. She has delivered many orations/named lectures nationally and internationally. She is a recipient of several academic awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the President of India for excellence and achievements in medicine.

Prof. Pawankar has organized several conferences and educational symposia/seminars and is an avid educator having lectured in over 60 countries. Her research has focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of allergy, in particular, characterizing mast cells and T cells, epithelial cell-immune cell interactions, novel roles of IgE, mast cell-IgE cascade, environmental pollution, immunotherapy, and new therapies for respiratory allergies. She has published 392 articles as peer-reviewed original articles, invited reviews, and book chapters. Prof. Pawankar is Editor/Associate Editor of peer-reviewed journals and books and co-author of many consensus documents. In her role as President of the WAO, she is working on the creation of a channel of dialogue between multidisciplinary stakeholders to address the unmet global public health issue of asthma and allergic diseases.
