Ross qualified from Newcastle in 1984. Determined to be an academic orthodontist, he undertook house jobs in Birmingham and Newcastle. He was a junior lecturer in oral biology for 2 years gaining his Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. He then headed north to Glasgow for his registrar training in oral and maxillo facial surgery, paedodontics (children's dentistry), prosthodontics (dentures), periodontics and oral medicine, gaining his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS, RCPS).
Ross travelled to Dundee for his specialist registrar training in orthodontics, passing his MDOrth examination before returning to Newcastle as Lecturer in Orthodontics in 1992. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 2001. He was head of Child Dental Health and Degree Programme Director for the MSc in Orthodontics 3 years specialist training until he left the university in April 2009.
