Roger originally trained as a Civil Engineer before taking up a career in Medicine. He graduated from Manchester University in 1987 and trained in General Medicine on the Birmingham rotation. His Radiology training was on the Bristol training scheme when he developed an interest in Neuroradiology. His specialist Neuroradiology training was performed in Bristol and Manchester. He also obtained sub specialty training in Interventional Neuroradiology in Nottingham, UK, and Gothenburg, Sweden.

He was appointed as Consultant Neuroradiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1996 and transferred to Salford with Neuroscience service reconfiguration in 2002. He is past secretary of the UK Neurointerventional group and is currently a member of the British Society of Neuroradiology Committee. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Manchester University and has written a number of peer review papers. He was Clinical Director of Radiology for four years prior to taking up his role as Chair of the Division in July 2010.
