Dr Rod Hughes has been consultant rheumatologist at St Peter’s hospital for twenty years. He qualified at Oxford University and the London Hospital Medical School. His training took him to Northwick Park Hospital and then on a south west Thames rotation as registrar. He completed an MD thesis looking at the cause of reactive arthritis before taking up his post at St Peter’s hospital.

Since his appointment he has held numerous posts locally including Clinical Director of medicine and lead consultant in rheumatology. He is currently lead for education and training in medicine, college tutor and training programme director for rheumatology at KSS deanery.

He is an accredited educator for the Royal College of Physicians, an examiner for MRCP PACES and runs a diploma course for GPs with a special interest in rheumatology. He is past president of the Rheumatology section at the RSM, past trustee and Chair of the External relations Committee at the BSR and has an active research unit at St Peter’s Hospital. As well as being a rheumatologist he is an experienced general physician and supervises medical ward at St Peter’s and participates in the general medical take. His experience in both rheumatology and general medicine, his research activity and his interest in medical education ensures that he remains at the forefront of rheumatological knowledge in the UK contributing articles, abstracts and papers to the medical literature.
