Roderick H. W. Simpson Bsc, MB ChB, MMed (Anat Path), FRCPath

Dr. Simpson attended the Universities of St. Andrews and Dundee, Scotland. After receiving his medical degree, he trained as a histopathologist at Guy’s Hospital, London and at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He spent 3 years as a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and then took up a post as consultant in Histopathology at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Devon, England. He remained there until 2013 when appointed as Professor of Pathology at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

He dates his interest in head and neck pathology to attending a series of lectures in Johannesburg by John Batsakis of MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. In Exeter, he developed a consultation practice in head and neck pathology and published several papers on salivary gland tumours, usually in collaboration with pathologists from the Czech Republic and Finland. He has given multiple courses at the British Division of the IAP and the European School of Pathology in Turin, Italy and several other European countries, and has been an invited speaker at European and international IAP congresses, as well as in places as varied as Transylvania, St. Petersburg (Russia), Pakistan, India, Tanzania, Rwanda, Peru and New York.

He has been chairman of the European Society of Pathology Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology, having previously served as secretary of the European Society of Pathology and on the councils of the British Division of the IAP and Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. His outside interests include wildlife photography, especially in Africa.
