Prof. Dr. med. Roberto F. Speck is a Professor of Medicine and Senior Attending Physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), Switzerland. He is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases with extensive clinical expertise in viral infections, including HIV, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), JC virus, and COVID-19, as well as sexually transmitted infections, antimicrobial therapies, tuberculosis, and the management of infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients. He also has specialized experience in fecal microbiota transplantation for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection.

Prof. Speck's research focuses on developing innovative therapeutic strategies for HIV, including gene therapy, bispecific antibodies, and immunomodulatory approaches. His laboratory also investigates the molecular regulation of interferon signaling, particularly the role of USP18, and explores genetically engineered macrophages for cancer immunotherapy. His internationally recognized research program combines translational science with clinical innovation and collaborates with leading institutions across Europe. In addition to his research, Prof. Speck serves on several scientific and professional committees, is an editor for Medical Microbiology and Immunology and PLOS ONE, and has held leadership roles within the Swiss Society of Infectiology, reflecting his longstanding commitment to advancing infectious disease research, patient care, and medical education.
