Prof. Dr. Lorusso studied medicine at the University of Milan, Italy, and graduated Magna cum Laude in 1987.
He worked at Maastricht University Hospital in 1990 at CTC research and in 1996 and 1997 at the University Hospital of Leuven, Belgium, and obtained his Ph.D. in Maastricht in 1998. He was a staff member of Cardiac Surgery and head of the Experimental Lab at Brescia Community Hospital in Italy.
Furthermore, he was scientific secretary of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (2007-2008), director of the EACTS (European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) School (2008-2012) in Bergamo (Italy) and Windsor (UK), is now president of Euro-ELSO, the European part of ELSO (Extracorporeal Life Support Organization) and member of the ELSO Executive Committee.
He is Associate Editor for the International Journal of Cardiology (Cardiac Surgery Section) and was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Multimedia Manual of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (Adult Surgery Section) at EACTS. prof. Dr. R. Lorusso is the Acting Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
