Professor Robert Grimer qualified at the Middlesex Hospital in London in 1976. His first house job was working for Rodney Sweetnam who dealt with bone tumours, almost always by amputation. Deciding on a career in Orthopaedics he obtained the FRCS and was appointed to the West Midlands training scheme where in 1980 he became Registrar to Rodney Sneath at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

In four short years, the management of bone tumours had changed from immediate amputation to almost certain death to chemotherapy and limb-salvage surgery with a good chance of survival. Professor Grimer was hooked and subsequently became the UK's first-ever Orthopaedic Oncology Consultant dealing with bone and soft tissue sarcomas. He established one of the largest Sarcoma units in the world with an international reputation for research and innovation. He has lectured in over 30 countries and has over 360 peer-reviewed publications.

Retired from clinical practice in 2016 (40 years to the day from starting) he maintains an active interest in research. He has extensive medico-legal experience in both personal injury reporting and in medical negligence cases, acting impartially for both the claimant and defendant.
