Professor Robert J. Vallerand is currently Full Professor of Psychology at the University of Quebec in Montreal where he holds a Canada Research Chair in Motivational Processes and Optimal Functioning and is Director of the Research Laboratory on Social Behavior. Professor Vallerand obtained his doctorate from the Université de Montréal and pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Waterloo. He has been a Professor at both the University of Guelph and the McGill University where he has also held a Canada Research Chair.

Professor Vallerand has displayed administrative and scientific leadership in a number of ways. Thus, he has served as Chair of both the Psychology Department at the University of Quebec in Montreal and the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. He also has been the President of the Quebec Society for Research in Psychology, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the International Positive Psychology Associati (IPPA). He was Conferencee Chair of the Canadian Psychological Association Convention (2006, 2007, 2008) and that of the World Congress on Positive Psychology held in Philadelphia, USA (2011).

He has also served or serves as Consulting Editor for several of the top international journals in the field, including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Motivation and Emotion, Psychology of Well-Being: Theory, Research and Practice, the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, and many others. He has also served on several national committees such as the College of assessors of the Canada Research Chair program and on the Molson Prize committee.
