Robert Iannone MD, MSCE, is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric hematologist-oncologist. Dr Iannone graduated with a BS Summa Cum Laude from The Catholic University of America as a Cardinal Gibbons Scholar. The NIH Summer Student Program inspired him to pursue a career as a physician-scientist. Subsequently, he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Yale Medical School.
Dr Iannone was trained in pediatrics and pediatric-hematology-oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident. His fellowship research project focused on bone marrow transplantation under the mentorship of Ephraim Fuchs. After fellowship, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was an NIH-funded member of the section of Bone Marrow Transplantation. During this time, Dr Iannone earned a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
He joined Merck Clinical Pharmacology as an Associate Director, and thereafter held roles with increasing responsibility: Director of Clinical Pharmacology, Senior Director and Site Head for Experimental Medicine, and Executive Director and Section Head of Oncology Clinical Development. In the latter role, Dr Iannone had leadership responsibility for the development of immune-oncology assets, including Pembrolizumab. He also served as Chair of the Pediatric Development Committee since its inception. Dr Iannone joined AstraZeneca as Global Products Vice President, and currently serves as Senior Vice President and Head of Immuno-oncology, Global Medicines Development.
