Dr. Robert E. Ratner is Chief Scientific & Medical Officer for the American Diabetes Association, the nation's largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop Diabetes.Dr. Ratner joined the Association in May 2012 and provides leadership and oversight of scientific and medical activities including research, clinical affairs, program recognition and certification, medical information and professional education.

He oversees the Association's support of a broad range of professional education activities and the development of the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care, clinical consensus reports and expert opinions. In 2014, the Association provided nearly $30 million in research funds to support 376 projects performed by 364 investigators at 143 leading research institutions.

Prior to joining the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Ratner was a Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical School and Senior Research Scientist at the MedStar Health Research Institute in metropolitan Washington, DC. He recently completed a sabbatical as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, having served as the study director for the Institute of Medicine Comparative Effectiveness Research Priorities Committee, and a program examiner for health reform in the Health Division of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
