Dr Robert Cheng is a procedural gastroenterologist and hepatologist. He holds a staff specialist appointment at Concord Hospital and is currently undertaking his doctoral thesis (PhD) on novel genomic biomarkers for liver cancer at Centenary Institute, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Dr Cheng studied medicine at the University of New South Wales; afterwards he trained as a physician and gastroenterologist in Sydney at leading tertiary institutions including Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore and Concord Hospitals, as well as at major regional centres including Wollongong and Gosford Hospitals. After becoming a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Dr Cheng undertook one year of liver transplantation fellowship at the Australian National Liver Transplant Unit. He was subsequently awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) scholarship to pursue a postgraduate Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in liver injury and liver cancer through the University of Sydney and Centenary Institute. He has publications in various Gastroenterology and Hepatology journals. His interest areas include liver cancer screening and management, bowel cancer screening, viral hepatitis and liver transplantation.
