Dr. Burakoff joined the Division of Gastroenterology as Clinical Chief in January 2003, after serving as Chief of the Gastroenterology Division at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York and Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook. During his tenure at Washington Hospital Center, he organized the first Digestive Disease Center in Washington DC, which included a center for Crohn’s and Colitis, a GI motility center, a unit for liver disease and a center for pancreatico-biliary disease.

He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Seminars in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Burakoff’s current clinical research interests include therapeutic trials for the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis; gene expression in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; diagnosis and treatment of esophageal motility disorders including GERD and non-cardiac chest pain; and health policy and health care economics.
