Dr. Robert A. Balk, MD, MACP, MCCM, FCCP, FAARC, is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Rush University and a nationally respected expert in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, and undertook specialized training in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Dr. Balk has had a long and distinguished academic and clinical career at Rush University Medical Center, where he served as Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and held the J. Bailey Carter, MD Professorship of Medicine. His clinical expertise spans the management of complex pulmonary diseases and critical care conditions, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock, severe pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and respiratory failure. His leadership was foundational in developing advanced pulmonary and critical care programs, including pulmonary rehabilitation and multidisciplinary critical care services.
