Richard’s 40-year career includes both public and private company leadership roles, spanning across healthcare services, and entrepreneurial start-ups. Richard previously served as president of American Healthways (now Healthways Inc.) and is currently CEO of Boston-based Medically Home Group, clinically-partnered with Atrius Health. His passion for transforming medical care is heavily influenced by his personal family history and experience.
After the loss of his father to medical errors in a hospital, Richard went on a journey of disruption that led to a commitment to reinvent how acute medical care is delivered. Trained as an engineer and a big fan of clinicians, he set out to create temporary hospital units in patients’ homes as an alternative to traditional hospitalization. After publishing a clinical trial verifying his approach, his company (Medically Home Group) is now actively treating patients in Boston with this model. A recent Wall Street Journal article featured the work Medically Home is doing in Boston.
Richard’s perspective provides refreshing insight into the non-sustainable economics of hospitals and how these economics punish patients and medical providers alike. His work dispels the myth that centralized hospital care is more efficient that bringing care to patients when and where they need it. He is a proponent that the time has come for the Amazon of healthcare – “bring it to me!”.
