Richard Rainsbury was the Foundation College Tutor for Breast Disease at The Royal College of Surgeons of England, College Director of Education and President of the Association of Breast Surgery. He has been a strong advocate of the model of the 'oncoplastic' breast surgeon, combining comprehensive breast cancer and reconstructive services in the context of the UK's National Health Service.
He has been Director of the Winchester Breast Unit for almost 30 years, working with colleagues to ensure ‘state of the art’ treatment for all women referred to the hospital.

His interests include changing the configuration of breast surgery, developing new oncoplastic services, and increasing recruitment into breast surgery. As founder chairman of a new Interface Group between breast and plastic surgeons in 2001, he secured Department of Health funding for a new national cross-specialty training scheme, which has appointed over 110 fellows from a background of breast and plastic surgery. More than 60 fellows have taken up consultant posts and are increasing the quality of care throughout the UK and overseas.

He has delivered over 120 national and 90 international presentations on a wide range of reconstructive, training and educational topics, and is the senior author of more than 50 papers and 13 book chapters in his field. He chaired the recent UK National Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction Audit Clinical Reference Group, and edited the latest UK National Guidelines for Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction.
