Dr Lessells is an infectious diseases specialist and group leader at the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He did his clinical training in infectious diseases and internal medicine in Edinburgh and Nottingham, and his research training at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has been working in KwaZulu-Natal since 2007. He currently works with the CAPRISA Advanced Clinical Care Program to strengthen capacity for clinical management of complex HIV and TB disease in KZN. His research group at KRISP is focused on understanding the epidemiology of drug-resistant infections (particularly HIV and TB) and developing new tools and strategies to prevent the emergence and transmission of drug-resistant infections.
