Dr. Richard Komistek earned a bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Memphis. He currently serves as the Co-Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and is the Fred M. Roddy endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Prior to accepting his position at UT, Dr. Komistek held appointments as Co-Director of the IBDMS NSF Center; Assistant Research Professor and then Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines; and Instructor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Memphis. In addition, Dr. Komistek served as Center Director at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; President and Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory; Director of Research at the Rose Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory; and Research Engineer and then Senior Research Engineer at Wright Medical Technology, Inc. His research interests focus on developing mathematical models of the human body musculoskeletal system, analyzing the failure modes for total joint arthroplasty, in vivo kinematic and kinetic analysis of the human body, closed and open loop control systems of the human body, and design of total joint implantable devices.
