Richard Colgan MD

Dr. Richard Colgan is a Professor Emeritus of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is widely recognized for his contributions to primary care medicine, medical education, and compassionate patient-centered healthcare. Throughout his career, he has held several leadership roles, including Vice Chairman for Medical Student Education and Clinical Operations and Director of the Maryland Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program.

Dr. Colgan earned his BA in Biology from The Catholic University of America and pursued graduate studies in Biochemistry at Johns Hopkins University before receiving his MD from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico. He completed his residency and chief residency in Family Practice at the University of Maryland Hospital.

His clinical and academic interests include infectious diseases, urinary tract infections, respiratory illnesses, hypertension, diabetes, antibiotic resistance, and the humanistic aspects of medicine. He has authored numerous scholarly publications and books, including Advice to the Young Physician: On the Art of Medicine and Advice to the Healer: On the Art of Caring.

Dr. Colgan has received multiple honors for teaching excellence and humanitarian service, including the American Medical Student Association Golden Apple Award and recognition in Best Doctors in America and Castle Connolly Top Doctors. He has also served as a volunteer physician with the Maryland Defense Force and contributed to healthcare outreach initiatives for underserved communities
