Richard C. Allen MD PhD FACS attended Duke University and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a BS in Chemistry. He received his MD and PhD degrees from Baylor College of Medicine and completed an internship at the University of New Mexico and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa.
In 2000, Dr. Allen joined the Dept. of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine where he was Chief of the Ophthalmology Service at Ben Taub General Hospital. In 2002, he joined the faculty in the Division of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico (UNM). From 2004 to 2006, he completed additional fellowship training in oculoplastic surgery at the University of Iowa.
In 2006, Dr. Allen returned to New Mexico where he rejoined the faculty at UNM and also practiced oculoplastic surgery at Eye Associates of New Mexico. In 2009, Dr. Allen returned to the University of Iowa as an Associate Professor where he attained tenure. In 2013-14 he spent six months as a visiting physician at St. Eriks Eye Hospital in Stockholm. Dr. Allen joined the Section of Ophthalmology, Dept. of Head and Neck Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as a Professor in 2015.
