Dr. Riccardo Perfetti, M.D., Ph.D., is the Vice President of Global Medical Affairs and the Senior Medical Officer in the Diabetes Division at Sanofi. In his current role Dr. Perfetti is engaged in defining the interaction between the Diabetes Division and the outside interlocutors (including the Academia, the Key Opinion Leaders, the Payors, the Regulators). Dr. Perfetti is also the Head of the Diabetes Medical Group which includes the top appointed medical personnel in the country’s affiliate organizations.
Dr. Perfetti received his medical training in University “La Sapienza,” Rome, Italy in 1985 and completed his endocrinology training in 1989 with his thesis looking at “the definition of an assay for the detection of auto-insulin antibodies” (for his M.D. degree in 1985) and at the “identification of an insulin-like growth factor-binding protein synthesized by mouse glomerular mesangial cells in culture” (for his Endocrine Specialty in 1989).
He continued his training achieving a Ph.D. in molecular endocrinology in 1995 as a part of joint program between The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA) and the University La Sapienza; his PhD thesis dealt with “Identification of a regenerative protein for pancreatic islet beta cells”.
Dr. Perfetti spent 10 years (1988-1997) at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland holding various positions and achieving the level of Senior Staff Scientist. During the years at the National Institutes of Health he held a joint position of senior scientist at the Johns Hopkins University where he conducted the research for his Ph.D. dealing with mechanisms regulating the regeneration of the insulin secreting cells.
