Prof.dr.ir. Rene H. Wijffels is professor in Bioprocess Engineering at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Research is focused on production of biomass, specific biomass ingredients and enzymatic conversions at high efficiencies and high volumetric productivities. For an optimal biomass productivity an integrated approach is used in which the production system (the bioreactor) is improved, the molecular metabolism is controlled (metabolic flux) and the compounds are isolated (biorefinery): www.bpe.wur.nl.
We have an extensive microalgae research program in collaboration with industry (www.algae.wur.nl). Rene is scientific director of the pilot plant facility AlgaePARC (www.AlgaePARC.com) and director of the Centre for Biobased Economy (www.CBBE.nl). The Centre for Biobased Economy develops biobased education and applied research programs.
