Remo Panaccione MD, FRCPC

Dr/Prof Remo Panaccione is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at the University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada. He serves as the Dean of MD Admissions and Director of the IBD Fellowship Program. He holds the  Crohn’s Colitis Canada Endowed Research Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He serves as an executive member for the International Organisation for the Study of IBD (IOIBD)

He is the 2020 Crohn's Colitis Canada Outstanding Physician of the Year and has been recognised as a 2020-23 Clarivate Research Scholar for being cited in the top 1% of researchers in the world. He has co-authored over 350 manuscripts, 20 book chapters, and 625 abstracts, including publications in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Nature, and Annals of Internal Medicine.

He is a founding member of the Crohn’s Colitis Canada PACE initiative ( 5 million dollar grant) and National Clinical IBD Lead on the Canada Institutes of Health (CIHR) SPOR IMAGINE grant (25 million dollars). Prof. Panaccione’s main research interest is the design and implementation of clinical trials. He has been the principal investigator on several studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of new therapeutic agents in patients with IBD. Dr. He is a recognised authority on IBD therapeutics and has co-authored numerous guidelines for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology.

He co-founded and chairs the Canada Future in IBD program with Crohn’s Colitis Canada in 2015, which is the premier IBD conference in the country.  He also co-founded the Canadian GI residents course in IBD  in 2010. He leads and co-chairs many international courses in IBD and is a well-sought-after lecturer nationally and internationally, having delivered over 150 invited addresses in the last five years.  For his efforts her has been recognised nationally with the Finkelstein award, which is the highest honour awarded by Crohn’s Colitis Canada, and was elected to the IOIBD in 2012.
