Rayleigh Ping-ying Chiang MD, MMS

Dr. Rayleigh Ping-Ying Chiang is an otolaryngologist and sleep specialist in Taiwan. After spending two years in the lab for an animal study on the Effect of Intra-tympanic Medications on Cochlear Blood Flow in Guinea Pigs, he was awarded the degree of “Master of Medical Science” by the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Taiwan University. After this, he became the first surgeon in Taiwan to qualify for the research fellowship of Stanford Sleep Disorders Center following the contributions to basic research and clinical practice made by world-famous professors including Christian Guilleminault, Nelson Powell, and Robert Riely, and Kasey Li. During this period he published a review article on “Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome” with Professor Guilleminault in the “Indian Journal of Sleep Medicine”. He also participated in a 5-year study conducted by Professor Powell, Sleepy Driver Near-Misses May Predict Accident Risks, which utilized a sample of 35,217 individuals. This paper was published in the journal Sleep in 2007. An invitation was also extended to serve as a reviewer on professional journals, such as Laryngoscope, Journal of Biomedical Engineering, and Fu Jen Journal of Medicine, and as a member of the Advisory Committee Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Government in Taiwan.

Dr. Chiang joined the faculty of the School of Medicine, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, after returning from Stanford. He pioneered the incorporation of sleep medicine into the curriculum of “The Graduate Institute of Medicine, School of Medicine at Fu Jen University, and Department of Medical Radiation Technology of National Yang-Ming University, Taipei. In Sep. 2006, he was designated as the Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery” in the School of Medicine, Fu Jen Catholic University. During this period he actively participated in and was invited to many international conferences and workshops, such as AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting in Los Angeles LA, U.S. 2005, National Sleep Medicine Course sponsored by AASM in Oak Brook, IL, U.S. 2006, the 1st Singapore Sleep Surgery Course 2006, 22nd APSS in Minneapolis, MN, U.S. 2007, the 5th Sleep Respiration Forum 2008 in Otaru, Japan, the 1st Singapore Sleep Symposium 2008 in Singapore, the 9th World Congress on Sleep Apnea 2009 in Seoul, South Korea, the 6th Asian Sleep Research Society (ASRS) Conference 2009 in Osaka, Japan, and the 2009 KyungHee International Rhinologic Symposium in Seoul, South Korea, Pervasive Health 2010 in Munich, Germany, 24th APSS in San Antonio, Texas, U.S. 2010, to name but a few. He is now one of the lead surgeons in the field of sleep surgery in Taiwan and was elected as a member of the "Board of Directors, Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine". In addition to clinical experiences in all of their rich variety, he has been interested in basic research, including genetic studies of obstructive sleep apnea, the central and peripheral neurodegeneration in patients with sleep-disordered breathing, and the latest "Smart Living Space" in the field of Sleep Technology.
