Dr. Randy Vander Wal, PhD, is a Professor in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State University Park), with joint appointments in Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of Wisconsin and earned bachelor’s degrees in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from Calvin College. Dr. Vander Wal’s research career began in physical chemistry and expanded through postdoctoral work in laser-based optical diagnostics and materials characterization.
His current research focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and application of carbon and oxide nanomaterials, including flame- and CVD-synthesized carbon nanostructures, graphene and advanced carbon composites, and combustion-produced particles, with applications in energy, catalysis, sensors, and environmental health. He has also pioneered metrics for carbon nanostructure quantification and led projects concerning carbon materials for energy storage and sustainable technologies.
Dr. Vander Wal teaches courses spanning fuels chemistry, energy conversion, catalytic materials, and analytical methods, and is actively involved in interdisciplinary research groups such as the Institute of Energy and the Environment at Penn State. His work bridges fundamental chemical physics, materials science, and energy engineering, contributing to both academic scholarship and practical advances in nanomaterials and energy systems.
