Dr. Burt is Professor of Medicine and holder of the Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair in Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Utah College of Medicine, did his internal medicine residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri, and returned to the University of Utah for his GI Fellowship. He then worked with Dr. Eldon Gardner, Dr. Mark Skolnick and others to develop expertise in familial risk and inheritance of colorectal cancer.

Dr. Burt is an MD clinical investigator (gastroenterologist) and practicing physician whose central research and clinical interest has been familial and hereditary colorectal cancers. He was involved with identifying the APC gene, the major disease gene involved in both inherited and common colorectal cancers. He has also done extensive work in clarifying the cancer risk in both the inherited colon cancer syndromes and common familial colon cancer.
